About Edo Festival UK
Edo Festival UK is a registered limited organisation, proudly established in 2011 in the United Kingdom. The group has its roots in the culturally rich region of Southern Nigeria, specifically the historic Benin Kingdom in present-day Edo State. Known for its sophisticated civilisation, the Benin Kingdom dates back to the 11th century and is globally recognized for its artistic mastery, bronze casting, royal heritage, and unique socio-political structure.
The Edo community in the UK continues to grow rapidly, with a steady influx of Edo indigenes choosing the UK as their new home. As one of the emerging culturally and linguistically diverse African communities, the Edo diaspora in the UK plays a vital role in promoting Nigerian cultural values while contributing to British multiculturalism.
Purpose and Cultural Relevance
The Edo Festival UK was created to unite Edo sons and daughters from across the globe, offering them a platform to reconnect with their roots, share their heritage, and pass it on to future generations. At the heart of the festival is the celebration of Edo traditions, values, language, and creativity.
Beyond celebration, the festival also serves a broader purpose: to honour and recognize individuals—both in the diaspora and in Nigeria—who have made significant contributions toward the progress of the Edo community socially, economically, and culturally.
Programme Highlights
Each year, the Edo Festival UK showcases a vibrant lineup of cultural and social activities that capture the soul of Edo heritage:
Cultural Troupe Dances: Traditional performances featuring the royal court dances, Igue festival displays, and folk narratives, directly from Edo State.
Stand-up Comedy: Delivered in Edo and English, offering humour that blends traditional wisdom with modern-day realities.
Award Presentations: Celebrating Edo personalities who have made remarkable contributions in areas such as leadership, entrepreneurship, education, health, and community service.
Live Performances: Featuring top-tier artistes and emerging talent from Edo State, highlighting the musical rhythms and languages (such as Bini, Esan, Afemai) that define the region.
Community Engagement
In addition to the main festival event, Edo Festival UK is committed to grassroots development and social inclusion. Our ongoing community initiatives include:
Funfair Events: Family-oriented cultural showcases that blend traditional games, food, and storytelling.
Seaside Trips: Promoting social bonding, relaxation, and mental well-being for community members.
Social Work for the Elderly: Outreach programmes aimed at supporting vulnerable elders within the community.
Recreational and Educational Activities: Empowering youth and adults through seminars, cultural education, and creative workshops.
Annual Awards Nomination and Presentation: Encouraging excellence and positive role modelling within the Edo diaspora.
Shatter the icons of slavery and fear. Replace the leer of the minstrel’s burnt-cork face with a proud, serene and classic bronze of Benin.
